The Île-de-France Region is once again asserting its dominance as France’s foremost public financier of cinema at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, presenting 16 supported films in official selections and celebrating a total of 20 projects either backed or accompanied by the region and its film commission, Film Paris Region.
Since 2016, the Region has invested an average of €24 million annually into film and audiovisual production, supporting nearly 150 films each year. This sustained commitment to cinema makes Île-de-France a cornerstone of French film financing and a powerhouse of cultural creation.
At Cannes 2025, films supported by the Region are present across a wide array of categories, including the prestigious Official Competition, Un Certain Regard, and the Critics’ Week. Highlights include La Petite Dernière by Hafsia Herzi and Les Aigles de la République by Tarik Saleh in Competition, as well as La Disparition de Josef Mengele by Kirill Serebrennikov in Cannes Première. Film Paris Region also accompanied selections such as Dossier 137 by Dominik Moll and Dalloway by Yann Gozlan.
The Region and Film Paris Region are also active participants at the Marché du Film, hosting international networking events and industry panels at Pavilion 102 of the Village International Riviera. Their schedule includes initiatives such as Shoot the Book, a showcase for literary adaptations, and roundtables with international film commissions and employment-focused organisations like Audiens.
Industry meetings throughout the festival will focus on pressing issues such as the challenges facing the animation sector, the impact of generative AI on filmmaking, and the enforcement of new regional conditions for funding tied to the prevention of sexual and sexist harassment in the workplace. These funding conditions now require proof of preventative measures, a designated harassment officer on productions, and visibility of available support channels, including a hotline operated by Audiens.
Florence Portelli, Vice-President of the Île-de-France Region in charge of Culture, highlighted the pride the region takes in championing cinema. With its rich ecosystem of talent and production infrastructure, Île-de-France continues to serve as the creative engine of French filmmaking.
In 2024 alone, the region recorded nearly 7,500 days of shooting, with Film Paris Region supporting 324 projects. That momentum has continued into 2025, with nearly 100 projects already assisted. The Region, which hosts over 50% of France’s filming days, 64% of production companies, and 84% of industry jobs, remains a beacon for both national and international creators.
