The Princely Government of Monaco has activated the vigilance stage of its drought management framework to encourage more moderate water usage as environmental conditions decline. The move is intended to foster collective mobilisation before the situation necessitates more restrictive measures.
The decision follows a marked deficit in rainfall, a trend observed across the wider region. Since the beginning of the year, precipitation levels recorded in Monaco have been more than 50% below seasonal averages.
As the first level of the drought response system, the vigilance stage focuses on sensitising all users and promoting the adoption of water-saving practices. No formal restrictions on water usage have been implemented at this stage.
Residents are being urged to adopt simple daily habits to protect the water supply, such as running washing machines only with full loads, limiting the watering of gardens, and using water-efficient equipment. The government has also requested that individuals avoid non-essential water consumption.
Key professionals are receiving specific guidance regarding their operations. Recommendations for businesses include postponing the filling and emptying of swimming pools where possible, prioritising water-efficient equipment, rescheduling certain discharges, and recycling cleaning water when conditions allow.
The government has emphasised that water preservation is a collective responsibility requiring the commitment of individuals, professionals, and public actors. Officials will continue to monitor the situation closely and will adjust the response in a progressive, responsible, and proportionate manner.
