During the Formula 1 TAG Heuer Grand Prix de Monaco, the Principality’s Direction des Plateformes et des Ressources Numériques (DPRN), in collaboration with France’s Agence Nationale des Fréquences (ANFR), is deploying an enhanced radio spectrum management and monitoring operation to safeguard wireless communications.
This year, the on-site presence of ANFR Director General Gilles Bregant alongside DPRN Director Christophe Pierre highlights the critical strategic importance of the mission. With thousands of wireless devices in operation—from team radios and broadcast systems to mobile phones and emergency networks—the electromagnetic environment during the Grand Prix is especially complex and dense.
The radio spectrum, though invisible, is a vital public resource. To ensure seamless operations and avoid harmful interference during this major international event, the DPRN begins preparations months in advance. Their teams assess spectrum needs, process temporary frequency authorisations, and coordinate technical parameters with all stakeholders. For the Grand Prix alone, around 600 frequency assignments are managed each year.
During the event, DPRN and ANFR teams are deployed across the circuit with mobile analysis units and advanced detection tools, ensuring uninterrupted communication and rapid response in case of signal disruptions. This round-the-clock presence guarantees the integrity of authorised frequencies and supports critical systems such as race control, emergency services, and live broadcast feeds.
This collaborative framework dates back to 2019 and extends beyond Monaco. The two agencies worked together during the 2024 Olympic Games at Munich’s Allianz Arena, further solidifying a trusted partnership.
The DPRN’s expertise continues to play a key role in major Monegasque events year-round, including the Monaco Yacht Show and Monte-Carlo Rally, as well as in supporting national frequency planning for sectors such as mobile telecommunications, maritime and aviation communications, and public and private broadcasting.
